The American Association of Retired Persons Foundation continues to sponsor a free tax filing program though the IRS and California Franchise Tax Board.

This year, the program will include assistance, by appointment only, at the Red Cloud Library in Greeley Hill.

The program will run on Saturdays from 11 am to 3 pm from February 6 until April 10.

Appointments can be made by calling Red Cloud Library, (209) 878-3692. Someone will return your phone call to either schedule an appointment time or answer questions.

The AARP also offers a free tax assistance program in Sonora from 8 am to 11:30 am on every Tuesday, starting February 2 through April 6 at the Tuolumne County Senior Center, 540 Greenley Road, Sonora. This is a walk-in site. Call 533-2622 for information.

Free assistance is given for senior, disabled, low and moderate-income taxpayers, that meet the criteria for filing.

Taxpayers with complex tax returns are advised to seek paid tax assistance.

You can not file with us if you have Schedule C (business profit and loss), complicated/lengthy Schedule D (capital gains and losses,), Schedule E (rental property, royalties, partnerships and trusts that involve depreciation), Forms: 2106, 3903, 8615, and some Schedule K-1s.

Those requiring assistance should bring a copy of their previous year’s tax return, all 2009 W-2 and 1099 forms, any information sent by the IRS and any documentation that may help reduce taxes.

If you purchased a new home in 2009 or a new (2009) vehicle, bring documentation of the purchase. Social Security Stimulus payment made to you in May 2009.

E-file (electronic filing) is available free of charge.

This service and direct deposit into your bank account will enable you to receive your refund in about a week.
