The Lake Don Pedro Owners Association has released official results from the December 18 election.
The new board members, along with the number of votes received, are: Jerry “Ron” Hunt, 932; Sherri Flosi, 860; Phyllis Cotta, 819; Bob Sykes, 775, Ray Tracy, 664; Mitchell Mattea, 545. and Ken Kennedy with 203 write-in votes.
The previous board was recalled in October: Lew Richardson, Bill Kinsella, Ken Kennedy, Charles Day and Victor Afanasiev were voted out of office in the recall; Sally Perez had already resigned.
LDPOA members organized a recall campaign because of mass complaints about several practices of the former board.
Many expressed concern about the association being held liable for slanderous attacks published on one board member’s Internet web log.
Others were incensed at the waste of thousands of dollars used to produce a new newspaper that used funds from property owners’ dues to publish personal attacks against association members and others in the community.
When members crowded into standing-room-only meetings to protest that practice, the board members refused to apologize or agree to stop attacking their fellow association members in print.
Not enough new candidates signed up to run for the new board. So supporters of recalled LDPOA Board President Ken Kennedy staged a write-in campaign to return him to the seat he was recalled from.
As a result, despite that there were 632 votes to recall Kennedy in the first place, and only 262 votes to keep him, he was re-elected to his recalled seat by a mere 203 write-in votes – meaning that a minority of voters were able to thwart the original recall intentions of a majority of voters.
