People who receive the Foothill Express but do not live here dream of eating a huge hamburger from our local eatery, the Lumberyard Café.
We had a tractor problem recently, so some farmer friends who also own cows came up from the Valley to help us determine what was wrong with the tractor. They receive the Foothill Express. For helping with the tractor, we offered to buy them lunch down in the Valley on their way home, as we had to go down to run errands anyway.
Their answer to the offer was, “No, we want to eat one of those giant hamburgers from the Lumberyard Café.” They had never eaten there before.
The farmers ordered cheeseburgers and commented that they were the best hamburgers they had eaten in years.
So good were the burgers, they asked us to bring some down the next time we headed their way, so we did a few days later. Just as good as the first time. The café has a really good takeout setup.
While eating at the restaurant with our friends, the owner’s wife said people ask what the sign in the café parking lot means that says, “EAT 3X MORE MEAT ON WEDNESDAY.”
The sign was part of a story I wrote about folks in San Francisco passing a non-binding ordinance requesting residents not to eat meat on Mondays. “Help fight global warming” nonsense. Meanwhile, this is one of the coolest summers in California.
My story was centered around the idea of eating three times more beef on Wednesday to make up for the loss of beef sales on the coast on Mondays. Because one cannot eat the giant burgers on Mondays and Tuesdays due to the Lumberyard being closed, you can “Eat 3X more meat on Wednesday.”
The best way to get your beef quota on Wednesday in these parts is to order the Paul Bunyan Burger. Three juicy patties of 100% Angus beef piled high with all the fixings and topped off with one of their great special buns.
When you see that handmade wooden sign at the restaurant, it means eat a triple-deck Paul Bunyan burger. Bring a few friends to help carry it away if you order it to go.
